Major Drugs of Abuse (MDOA’s) – General Information

Amphetamines (AMP)

Amphetamines are a central nervous system stimulant typcially prescribed by doctors to treat a multitude of disorders including ADHD, obesity and narcolepsy.

Common symptoms of Amphetamine abuse include: Dilated pupils, dry mouth, increased heart rate, hyperexcitable, restlessness

Barbiturates (BAR)

Barbiturates have a high addition rate – they are a central nervous system depressant that are used in medicine for general anesthesia, treatment of insomnia and anxiety, and for comparably minor ailments such as migrane headaches.

Common symptoms of Barbiturate abuse include: Confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness, inattentive, fatigue, poor coordination

Benzodiazepines (BZO)

Much like Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines are a central nervous system depressant used to treat ailments and disorders like anxiety and depression. Use of “”Benzos”” generally result in a muscle relaxant-type of sedative.

Common symptoms of Benzodiazepine use include: Confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness, inattentive, fatigue, poor coordination

Trade/Street Names: Alprazolam, Chlordiazepoxide, Diazepam, Nordiazepam, Oxazepam, Triazolam, Alpha-hydroxy-alprazolam, Temazepam, Lorazepam, Xanax, Niravam, Restoril, Normison, Ativan, Serax, Candy, Downs, Nerve pills, Tranks, Depressant

Buprenorphine-Suboxone (BUP)

Buprenorphine is prescribed by physicians used in the treatment of opiod addiction therapy. Also commonly known as “”Suboxone””, Buprenorphine can be highly addictive and potentially deadly when combined with alcohol consumption.

Common Symptoms of use include: Nausea, chills, sweating, teeth clenching, muscle cramping,, and blurred vision. Short-term effects include feelings of mental stimulation, emotional warmth, enhanced sensory perception, and increased physical energy.

Trade/Street Names: Buprenex®, Suboxone®, Subutex®

Cocaine (COC)

One of the most commonly abused illicit drugs, Cocaine is a stimulant with a highly addictive nature abused by all walks of life. This stimulant is a “”party drug”” and can be abused almost anywhere.

Common Symptoms of use include: Dilated pupils, dry mouth, insomnia, irritable, increased pulse rate, violent mood swings

Trade/Street Names: Coke, Flake, Snow, Crack, Benzoylecgonine, Blow, Bump, C, Candy, Charlie, Rock, Toot

Ecstasy (MDMA)

Ecstasy is a recreational drug and is known for heightening positive sensations. MDMA can be highly addictive and has many adverse side effects (listed below). As of 2017, MDMA has no known medical uses.

Common Symptoms of use include: addiction, memory problems, paranoia, difficulty sleeping, teeth grinding, blurred vision, sweating, and a rapid heartbeat.

Trade/Street Names: MDMA, E, Molly, Beans, Candy, Dancing Shoes, Disco Biscuits, Doves, E-bomb, Egg Rolls, Happy Pill, Hug Drug, Love Drug, Malcolm (or Malcolm X), Scooby Snacks, Smartees Sweets

Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG – Alcohol)

Common Symptoms of use include: Confusion, slurred speech, flushed face, warm skin, poor coordination, slow reaction rate, odor of alcohol on breath

Trade/Street Names: Ethyl glucuronide / Ethyl Sulfate

Fentanyl (FEN)

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiod 30 times more powerful than heroin. It is highly addictive and even the smallest overdose can be deadly. It is typically prescribed by doctors for patients in extreme pain and is also common with cancer treatment. It has recently been cut illegally with street heroin, adding to the already high opioid epidemic death toll.

Common Symptoms of use include: Euphoria, drowsiness, respiratory depression, nausea, confusion, dry mouth, sweating, constipation, sedation, unconsciousness

Trade/Street Names: Fent, Actiq, Duragesic, and Sublimaze. Street names for the drug include Apache, China girl, china white, dance fever, friend, goodfella, jackpot, murder 8, TNT, as well as Tango and Cash

Marijuana (THC)

Officially known as Cannabinoids, Marijuana (THC) is the most commonly used Major Drug of Abuse and is included on every multi-drug test. Marijuana is abused by all demographics and is commonplace in today’s society.

Common Symptoms of use include: Chronic fatigue, apathy, irritating cough, slowed speech, red and watery eyes, respiratory depression

Trade/Street Names: THC, Marinol, Marijuana, Pot, Weed, Hashish, boom, chronic, gangster, hash, hash oil, dope, ganja, grass, herb, joints, Mary Jane, reefer, sinsemilla, skunk

Methadone (MTD)

Methadone is prescribed by phsyicians to aid in the rehabilitation of narcotic addictions as well as extreme pain. It is known for having extremely dangerous interactions with alcohol and is highly addictive

Common Symptoms of use include: Nausea, vomiting, hallucination, headache, constipation, dry mouth, sweating, chronic fatigue

Trade/Street Names: Dolophine, Methadone, Dollies, Meth, Fizzies, Amidone

Methamphetamine (mAMP)

Essentially the illicit or illegal (street) version of Amphetamine.

Common Symptoms of use include: Dilated pupils, dry mouth, increased heart rate, hyperexcitable, restlessness

Trade/Street Names: Amphetamine, D&L Isomers, biphetamine, dexadrine, methamphetamine, desoxyn, Adderall, Speed, Uppers, Meth, bennies,black beauties, crosses, hearts, LA turnaround, truck drivers,chalk, crank,crystal, fire, glass, go, fast, ice

Nicotine – Cotinine (DCT)

Common Symptoms of use include: Increased bowel activity, Stimulates alertness, elevates blood glucose, increases heart rate, increases blood pressure

Trade/Street Names: Tobacco, Cigarettes, Cigar, Snuff, Chew, Commit, Habitrol, Leader Nicotine Polacrilex, Nicoderm, Nicorelief, Nicorette, Nicotrol

Opiates (OPI) and Morphine (MOP)

Opiates come in many natural AND synthetic forms – all of which are highly addictive and dangerous.

Common Symptoms of use include: Carelessness, confusion, depression, apathy, drowsiness, low blood pressure, poor coordination, slow breathing rate

Trade/Street Names: Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Oxycodone, Oxymorphone; Syrup, rabo, schoolboy, captain cody, cody, doors & fours, loads, pancakes and syrup

Oxycodone (OXY)

See Opiate/Morphine Information Above – Oxycodone is a synthetic version of Opiates, it has it’s own drug testing panel and cut-off level because of it’s high rate/commonality of abuse

Phencyclidine (PCP)

PCP is known for its highly addictive characteristics along with the association of dissociative hallucinogenic effects. It was originally intended to be used as an anesthetic, but since 1965 researchers have banned PCP in the medical field.

Common Symptoms of use include: Abnormal behavior, illusions and hallucinogens, poor perception, relaxed inhibitions

Trade/Street Names: PCP, Angel Dust, Hog, boat hog, love boat, peace pill, angel hair, angel mist, angel poke, amoeba, Ad, black dust, black whack, blue madman

Propoxyphene (PPX)

Very similar to Methadone, Propoxyphene is prescribed to aid in narcotic addiction therapy. It is generally taken orally and overdosing can lead to severe euphoria and addiction

Common Symptoms of use include: Carelessness, confusion, depression, apathy, drowsiness, low blood pressure, poor coordination, slow breathing rate

Trade/Street Names: Darvon, Darvocet, Propacet, Black beauties

Synthetic Marijuana (K2)

K2 is a street drug and is made up of many different drugs, herbs, and other unknown substances intended to mimic the effects of Marijuana. K2 can be difficult to test for because every “batch” or brand is made up of different combinations of ingredients which are constantly changing. K2 is marketed as a safe, recreational drug but it is actually extremely dangerous.

Tramadol (TRM)

Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain for rehab patients. Misuse can cause addiction, overdose or death. Severe/fatal side effects can occur when taken with alcohol.

Common Symptoms of use include: Dizziness, weakness, sleepiness, headache, flushing, nausea, sweating

Trade/Street Names: Rybix ODT, Ryzolt, Ultram, Ultram ER

Tricyclic Anti-Depressants (TCA)

Mostly commonly referred to as TCA’s, Tricyclic Anti-Depressants are a prescription based anti-depressant used primarily to treat depression, but also mood disorders, chronic nerve pain, manage obsessive compulsive behaviors, and to prevent migraines. Similar to the likes of Barbiturates and Benzodiazepines.

Common Symptoms of use include: dry mouth or nose, blurry vision, constipation, urinary retention, cognitive and/or memory impairment, increased body temperature
